Thanks for Voting for Big Brother Trevor Mulholland!

Big Brother Trevor Mulholland was in a national contest that celebrates student volunteerism and social responsibility. Trevor used this platform to share how his friendship with Little Brother Zack has changed the Big Brother's life. While Trevor did not win the contest, he did get a lot of votes and brought attention to the need for Bigs in the Cape Girardeau region. To see a list of winners, click here.

Trevor and Zack have been matched for roughly 18 months. The pair bonded over computer games and agree that they've both grown as a result of their experience together. Trevor summed it up best in the story he submitted for the contest: "It's been over a year now, and we still have lunch once a week. I've got a photo of the two of us and any time someone asks who the kid in the picture is, I say, "that's my brother."

The competition Trevor entered, National Student Day, is sponsored by the National Association of College Stores. Students submit stories about how they have given back by volunteering and then they encourage their friends and family to vote for them on the event's website. The top 10 vote getters are awarded a scholarship or an iPad. Trevor is a student at Southeast Missouri State University.

Derby Party Races Into Cape Girardeau, Charlie and Sydney Herbst Honored in Winners' Circle

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri’s annual Derby Party & Wine Auction galloped into Cape Girardeau this year and the organization is in its home turn in tallying up the winnings from the unique fund-raising effort. Nearly 200 guests attended the soiree that raised more than $100,000. All proceeds from the Derby-themed gathering remain in the Eastern Missouri region and are dedicated to surrounding children with trusting and enduring relationships.

The May 5th event was held at the home of Dr. William and Patricia LaFoe at Fox Run Stables near Cape Girardeau. It was hosted by the Big Brothers Big Sisters Cape Girardeau Regional Development Board. The annual Derby Party & Wine Auction is a festive and fun gathering where participants are invited to get into the spirit of the Kentucky Derby by sporting their seersucker suits and favorite big hats. Each year, the party rotates locations between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau.

The focus of this year’s party was twofold: to celebrate mentoring and to honor Cape Girardeau residents Charlie and Sydney Herbst. Longtime ambassadors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, the Herbsts, shown in photo below, were honored with the agency’s Hennings’ CircleSM Promise Award.  (The photo is courtesy of the Southeast Missourian newspaper.)
